At 8:57 a.m. on the 17th in Ohio, USA, a meteor approximately 1.8 meters in diameter and weighing 7 tons streaked across the sky. After flying 55 kilometers, it landed in Medina County, releasing energy equivalent to the explosion of 250 tons of TNT. The force of the explosion was so great that even the ground shook. At least ten states in the US received sighting reports, and the meteor's fall could even be seen from Canada.

That day, an orange-red fireball streaked across the blue sky and white clouds. Drivers on the highway also witnessed this meteor and exclaimed that they didn't know what it was. In the next second, the meteor landed, and a loud explosion was heard. One eyewitness said it was just a loud noise, like a "bang". Another eyewitness stated that they immediately thought something had crashed into their home, or something huge had hit their house.

Police radios broadcasted reports, asking if anyone had seen or heard the explosion, stating that it was definitely much bigger than fireworks. They felt the shockwave and, although unsure of what it was, knew it was truly massive.

William Cooke, manager of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, stated that the meteor fragmented violently, scattering debris, and the shockwave or pressure wave generated by the explosion reached the ground, which is the explosion everyone saw.

The rare daytime appearance of a meteor has drawn widespread attention. NASA stated that this event was rare because the meteor flew over a populated area. However, NASA also mentioned that the meteor's speed was 64,000 kilometers per hour; although this is more than 70 times the speed of a commercial airliner, it is actually considered slow for a meteor.
