According to News, a headquarters reporter learned on March 20 local time that, according to multiple U.S. officials, Iran "fired two medium-range ballistic missiles" at the U.S.-U.K. joint military base on Diego Garcia in the central Indian Ocean. One of the missiles reportedly "failed in flight," while a U.S. warship fired an interceptor at the other missile, and "it is currently undetermined whether the interception was successful."
Diego Garcia is a strategic base where the U.S. military deploys bombers, nuclear submarines, and guided-missile destroyers, serving as an "outpost" for U.S. strategic bombers to carry out long-range strikes, approximately 3,800 kilometers from the Iranian mainland.
The archipelago is located in the southwestern Indian Ocean about 750 kilometers northeast of Mauritius and was ceded to the British colonial authorities in 1965. In 1966, the UK leased Diego Garcia to the US to build an air base. In May 2025, sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago was officially transferred to Mauritius. Meanwhile, the Diego Garcia military base was leased by Mauritius to the UK and the US.
It is worth noting that, according to a Xinhua News Agency report, a statement issued by the British government on the 20th said the UK allowed the US to use its military bases to degrade Iran's missile bases and related strike capabilities.
The statement said that the agreement allowing the U.S. to use British military bases for "defense" applies to situations where the U.S. degrades Iranian "missile bases and associated capabilities used to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz." The statement also added that the UK would avoid being drawn into a "wider conflict."
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi responded to the UK's statement on social media that evening, saying, Iran will exercise its right to self-defense.
Araghchi stated that the vast majority of the British public do not want to be dragged into a war launched by Israel and the United States against Iran, and that the UK "ignores its own people and allows British bases to be used for aggression against Iran, which puts British lives at risk."
Earlier this month, British Prime Minister Starmer stated that he had agreed to allow the U.S. to use the military base on the Chagos Islands for "specific and limited" defensive purposes.
